Disability Insurance

Disability Insurance

Dealing with a serious illness or injury is difficult, and even more so when you’re unable to work. If even for a short time, being out of work can be devastating financially. Disability insurance can help make things easier.

Disability coverage is insurance that pays you if you are hurt or get sick and cannot work. It is temporary coverage based on your income. It replaces part of your income until you can return to work. Employers often offer disability policies as part of a benefits package.

This coverage is especially important for people who would face hardship if they were out of work. Self employed people and those who support others should really have this coverage. Disability coverage is a good idea for people with high-risk jobs, such as construction workers.

Your doctor must verify that you are unable to work for an extended period. Then you can file a claim. After a waiting period, your policy will start paying you, usually weekly.

Policies

Short-term disability provides coverage anywhere from a few weeks to up to six months. Long-term disability may continue indefinitely. However, if you are permanently disabled, you will be able to qualify for government disability benefits.
